yoga
Over the last few years yoga of all forms has become wildly popular and mainstream here in the US. If you haven’t tried it, you know someone who has or at least have some understanding of what yoga is all about. At least here in San Francisco, you’d be hard pressed to miss the hundreds of yoga studios blanketing the city. And for that matter, all the sweaty, mat carrying, peaceful individuals walking away from their weekly classes.

In our insanely fast paced and frankly overworked society, people are seeking the mind, body, and spiritual awareness you develop and practice with yoga. Most people know yoga as an individual tradition, but what if you had a partner to feed off of?
partner yoga
Welcome to partner yoga! The latest innovation in yoga classes. While any typical yoga class has you working on your own, partner yoga classes have you pair up with a friend to deepen the work and cultivate trust, connection and playfulness. AcroYoga, an internationally touring group of yogis based in San Francisco, developed a fusion of partner and acrobatic yoga that seriously takes the physicality of yoga to the next level. Their highest aim is to, “bring individuals into a state of union with themselves, with each other, and with the divine. From this place of mutual support the true self can be realized, honored and shared for the benefit of all.”

Sounds awesome right?! So, while you might not be able to take a class from these yogis anytime soon, there’s no reason you can’t try to pick up some great poses from their website. Check out their gallery here and this amazing video from the 2007 San Francisco Yoga Journal Conference!

Let’s partner up! Get connected and build trust with a good friend or significant other. I’ve definitely got to take advantage of the opportunity to actually take classes from AcroYoga. Anyone want to join?! Have fun and enjoy!

A radiant, blemish free complexion is coveted by just about everyone under the sun. Feeling self conscious about acne is something I was (and continue to be) well acquainted with.woman washing face Anyone who suffers from acne or other skin conditions have probably tried all the creams, pills, and tonics on the market…only to find these treatments are short term fixes with harsh side effects. But, what about the food we eat? If it holds true that we are what we eat than wouldn’t the food choices we make effect our skin? Absolutely!

According to Eastern holistic medicine by eliminating certain foods and adding others to our diets we can create gorgeous, clear skin for life. Two of the oldest holistic traditions in the East, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, both believe that all foods have properties that effect the body in certain ways. For example, some foods have a more inflammatory nature, while others cleanse and detox. Both medicine’s agree that acne and blemishs are caused by too much heat and dampness in the body. So the idea is to cool, dry and cleanse the skin from the inside out by consuming foods with such properties.

With that said, here’s your guide to eating right for clear skin!

Add: Beta-carotene/provitamin A foods which have an anti-inflammatory nature. Yellow and green beta-carotene foods to emphasize include carrots, winter squash, pumpkin, leafy greens such as dandelion greens, beet greens, spinach, kale, chard and water cress. All greens are rich in chlorophyll, which purifies the blood of the toxins that cause skin eruptions. So be sure to eat your greens.

The deep blue-green micro algae such as spirulina and wild blue-green are also beneficial. And as I have talked about before, seaweeds have a cooling, detoxifying nature, making them ideal for clearing your complexion!leafy greens

Drink: Plenty of water to flush out toxins. A common Ayurvedic remedy is to drink half a cup of aloa vera juice.

Eliminate: Spicy, fatty, or greasy foods. Sweets, citrus fruits, and certain fish (oysters, herring, and shrimp) are no-no’s as well. All of these foods create heat, dampness, and inflammation in the body, which leads to the breakouts on the skin. In terms of dairy, goat’s milk products are better choices during breakouts. Instead of reaching for processed, saturated fats, look for foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which actually nourish the skin.

Other Factors To Consider: As any woman can attest, emotional stress, menstrual related hormonal changes, and exposure to chemicals or too much sun are other known factors and causes of breakouts. So, while we can’t control our hormonal changes we can learn to relax, de-stress, and protect our skin from too much sun.

By coupling the proper clear-skin nutrition plan with relaxation and sunscreen you’ll be sure to walk out the door every morning with confidence and radiant skin you can actually feel!

smartwaterWhen I first heard there was a new bottled water called SmartWater I pretty much choked in exasperation. Just another marketing gimmick from the same company that brought us the sugar infused “Vitamin”Water. With all of my skepticism I refused to buy a bottle or even try it, until last week. One of my girlfriends was carrying a huge bottle back stage before our performance last weekend. She swore up and down that it really was amazing water that she religiously buys and drinks by the truckload.

A few days later my curiosity got the better of me and I just had to try it. To my surprise I could actually taste and feel the difference!! I have never tasted water so pure and refreshing. I could actually feel the water spread and hydrate through my digestive track. It was nuts!

So what’s so magnificent about SmartWater compared to other brands? It’s all in the process. Instead of collecting and bottling spring water that is contaminated, to some extent, by run off and the creatures that inhabit it, SmartWater is generated through a vapor distilling process. Glaceau recreated the cycle that occurs naturally among the clouds in the lab to create water as fresh as rain drops. After the distillation, electrolytes are added.
rain drop
Sounds great, but what the hell are electrolytes anyway and why are they such a selling point? After digging up some research I found that electrolytes are basically the product of what happens when a salt is dissolved in a solvent like water. Sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium are examples of a few of the key electrolytes. Our bodies need electrolytes because they regulate the hydration of the body, blood pH, and are critical for nerve and muscle function. Hence, why the electrolytes in SmartWater and sports drinks like Gatorade will increase your bodies ability to stay hydrated. It totally makes sense!

So, while I am a devoted Sigg reusable water bottle user and tap water drinker, I think I just might have to splurge on SmartWater every now and then. See what you think… oh yeah and don’t forget to recycle!

Ever have one of those days where everything goes right? You scored the promotion at work, finally talked to the hottie at the coffee shop, or just made a conscious effort to be positive and optimistic. You walk in the door and are bombarded by your roommate or significant other ranting and raving about how crappy their day was… and soon enough they boot you off of your happy cloud. While others have every right to vent their frustrations, why should their negative energy effect your spirit?

The key to maintaining your optimistic internal self is to learn how best to react to negative energy and stressors around you. Next time someone tries to drag you into their abyss try these simple tactics:

1. Don’t Let Them Rain On Your Parade: Make an effort to realize that the other person is obviously going through something and doesn’t know any other way to deal with it besides dumping it on you. While you want to be supportive their emotions and drama should not drain or negatively effect your internal space. Choose to keep yourself emotionally detached.

2. Lend An Ear: Be supportive by listening and helping them pull the positives out of the situation. Your positive energy will lighten the mood. Continuing to hash out their problem by adding your own will only cause a huge downward spiral. Remember that energy flows where attention goes. So make the focus up beat.

3. Walk Away: When all else fails, wait to talk until they have cheered up. If despite all the support you offer they still insist on remaining pissed then separate yourself. Even in the other room is enough. Only they can make the decision to switch their attitude and mind frame.

Everyday IS a perfect day, we just need to change the way we emotionally and thoughtfully approach every situation. By deflecting negative energy from others you’ll be on your way to one delightful day!

What is it about going barefoot? Whether it’s the sun kissed sand in the afternoon or the dewy grass field at dawn, there is something simply amazing about feeling the earth under our feet. In today’s concrete world we rarely find ourselves frolicking in a daisy field or taking long walks through the forest. Hell we hardly get outside! Research actually reveals that on average most humans spend 95 percent of their time indoors. While we might be getting a ton of work done, what are we sabotaging by not connecting with nature?
walking barefoot everywhere
As human beings who have evolved with and as a part of nature for over 40,000 years there is an intrinsic connection we have with Earth. Just taking a walk through a park or wood is enough to lift our spirits and calm the nerves and mind. While you may be thinking this is a little esoteric, numerous psychologists believe that prolonged separation from nature can result in psychological problems such as depression, alienation and dysfunctional behavior. These Ecopsychologists study how our psychological health is tied to our relationship with the natural environment. In short they believe that de-natured environments create de-natured people. Theodore Roszak, founder of the Ecopsychology Institute of California State University, states, “We have detached ourselves so completely from natural environment that it is wounding our mental health.”
sproutThink about it, when was the last time you actually touched soil with your bare hands or feet? Gardeners excluded (you lucky souls!), most people go for months without ever coming into contact. We live our lives inside temperature controlled rooms, and walking on concrete or other flooring. Even when we do take a walk on the wild side and venture into the city park or to a tranquil beach we still have a layer of rubber or leather between our feet and the ground. Usually in horribly uncomfortable shoes!

So Here Is Your Challenge: At least once a week take time out to commune with nature. Get your hands dirty! Whether you plant and mend a garden or dance naked under a moonlit field, feel the Earth under your feet. Inhale the fresh air, smell all the smells, take it all in. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel. You’ll soon crave that time outdoors. There’s a reason after months of long work indoors that we have to escape to some gorgeous tropical place… we need to see and feel the beauty of nature! Don’t wait until you go stir crazy, find a little touch of nature here and now.

Another fabulous way to do this is to add nature to your home. Create a harmonious environment that will nurture and sustain you by bringing plants, rocks, shells, and branches into your home as accents or decor. Gather leaves or flowers from the park and create a stunning centerpiece to bring nature to you. Fill your fountain with local river rock, that will remind you of the beauty of that particular river and adventure.

See you at the beach!
