eat pray love by elizabeth gilbertOver the last couple weeks I have been literally suction cupped to two fabulous new books. I am a huge reader and though I haven’t had the time recently, I had to make an exception for these mind blowing reads. Eat Pray Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert, and Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth, rocked my world and opened my eyes to the power of living life in the moment.

Mindfulness, or being present, is an idea I write about frequently because it’s the only way I have found to really experience and enjoy life. As much as I try to live mindfully, it’s challenging at times. I find myself swallowed in thoughts and overwhelmed a lot of the time. Thanks to these two books, I’m inspired, actually ecstatic, about incorporating more meditation and “living in the now” into my life.

eckhart tolle a new earthIn Eat Pray Love, Elizabeth Gilbert chronicles her journey around the world in her desperate attempt to find herself and purpose in life. I was given this book as a gift for Christmas and just got around to reading it. Every woman should read this book! If you’re looking for inspiration this is the ticket. Gilbert is hilarious, witty, and above all spiritually insightful.

Eckhart Tollee, on the other hand, follows up his #1 New York Times Best Seller The Power of Now, with A New Earth: Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose. Oprah jumped on this wonderful book taking Tolle’s philosophy and audience to new heights. In A New Earth, Eckhart expands on his powerful ideas of living “in the now” to show “how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world.” After reading The Power of Now, I was eager to read Tolle’s latest and found it utterly awakening. This book will show and teach you how to successfully live mindfully!

I can’t recommend these books enough!

writings on the stallOne of my many jobs takes me to San Francisco State University where I have the pleasure of visiting restrooms all over campus. I particularly like this certain bathroom because I can always find new quotes. There’s this cement column in the corner that I swear is washed off and than rewritten on. I always find some fun and inspirational quotes from all of the outspoken college ladies. Today, I was most inspired by this quote:

“Life is not a problem to be solved, but a mystery to be experienced.”

I love this idea! We spend so much of our time in life trying to figure everything out. We over analyze, worry, and stress over the littlest stuff. Good or bad, life is an experience. It’s all valid and in my opinion happens for a reason. Go along for the ride like you would on vacation, taking it all in! Here’s a similar idea I had to scribble down:

“Always keep your head up. Take a risk and get your heart broken. Love if they love you the same. If not, let go and don’t look back. Be proud of yourself everyday.”

What would you write on a stall wall?

Best Wishes For Today!

be positiveRecently I’ve been thinking a lot about all the plans I have set for myself in the future. Have I made the right choices? Should I choose a different path? Traveling always gives me such great perspective. Exploring new places and cultures, like my recent trip to Hawaii, makes me question. Life can be simpler, less stressful, and more positive. I just need to have the right mental attitude. Living in the hustle bustle of city life gets to me eventually. Before my trip I was over stressed, over worked, and super irritable. Making it through my day felt like pure survival. All I could think was, “this isn’t me. There’s got to be a better way.” It’s interesting how we lose ourselves in our stress. We become different people entirely. Moody, easily agitated, and ready to crack.

Our internal talk and attitude have everything to do with how we perceive and react to life. As I sat on the plane, flying back to the mainland, all I could think about was how to maintain what I had recovered of my easy going self. How do I stay positive, relaxed, and overall loving every moment of life? Life becomes so serious, until you see how other people live. We’ve got to enjoy our lives while we have them and not take life so seriously. I found the only way to keep my sanity and stay true to myself is to live in the moment. Don’t let your thoughts and worries take ahold of you. The choice is yours to make.

With all that being said, here are some of my favorite quotes that remind me to live life full throttle!

“Twenty years from now you’ll be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream and discover.”–Mark Twain

“The most painful thing to experience is not defeat but regret”– Leo Bascaglia

“Nothing on earth can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude”– Thomas Jefferson

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”– Mark Twain
