Going RAW: The Power of Prep Part II

While the benefits of going raw are many, here we are going to focus specifically on why raw food is important. Lots of people feel like they could go vegan but the raw part is a stretch as people believe that it we are required to eliminate many of our favourite comfort foods such as chips, crackers, baked sweets and bread.

Well fear not my friends. We can have you snacking on crackers, tortillas and donuts by tomorrow if we get the ball rolling today with a bit of preparation.

How you may ask?

The mighty dehydrator!

Dehydrators have the power to slowly remove moisture from whole foods by gently heating them at temperatures low enough to preserve live enzymes and protect sensitive nutrients. When food is subjected to high temperatures in the cooking process live enzymes are killed, proteins are denatured and delicate fats become oxidized. When we eat foods cooked at high temperatures our bodies have to do extra work to produce more of their own enzymes, repackage damaged proteins and use up precious antioxidants to fight free radicals. By keeping whole foods in their live natural form they already contain all of the elements needed to break themselves down and become powerful fuel for your body.

Maintaining a balanced healthy diet requires a bit of plan and preparation to ensure we have access to the food we need to fuel our bodies optimally. With a little foresight we can prepare our favourite comfort foods ahead of time in a way that gives our body both a break and a boost!

To get you started here is a recipe for super amazing and incredibly satisfying crackers, one sweet, one savoury.

Savoury Crackers

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup soaked flax seed
  • 1/2 cup soaked sesame
  • 1/4 cup soaked chia
  • 1/5 cup soaked oats
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • Mixed dried herbs
  • Pinch of pink salt

Breakfast Cracker

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup soaked flax seed
  • 1/4 cup soaked sesame
  • 1/6 cup soaked chia
  • 1/2 cup soaked oats
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla powder
  • 1/3 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup raisins

Directions:

  1. Mix everything in a big bowl
  2. Adjust seasonings to your taste
  3. Spread evenly on a lined teflex tray
  4. Dehydrate at 118 degrees for approximately 12 hours or until it is firming up.
  5. Flip your giant cracker onto the dehydrator tray peeling off the liner and dehydrate a further twelve hours or until your crackers are crispy!
  6. When they are done crack them into pieces and store in a sealed container in a cool place.
