As many of you may know through twitter and facebook, I am back in the city! I touched down in San Francisco the day before Thanksgiving and have spent the last few weeks getting back on my feet. The move back to the states from the wonderful land of Oz was a spontaneous and gut instinct. A short term regrouping in order to jump back into my passions hard core. I’ll delve more into my reasoning for all you curious souls in my next post, but for now I want to share with you one massive reason I am happy to call SF home once again.
Wait for it…get ready….

That’s right guys! As of October 21st, 2009 legislation requires that all households compost. I know! I was equally as floored. A gigantic city wide distribution of eco friendly compost bins is sweeping the city at this very moment. All management companies, home owners and renters alike must use the friendly bin or face a hefty fine.
So does that mean every apartment will have to pile and stir a massive, worm filled, smelly, fly haven? Not with a trend like this. Companies are clamoring to design the perfect counter top bin. Even Walgreens and Safeway selves are stocked with a variety of bright and stylish bins for those with discerning tastes.
This is exactly why I love the San Francisco community. It’s progressive, and innovative with an entrepreneurial buzz to die for.
I can’t tell you how excited I am to put my first orange peel in my bin. Do you compost?

Love it! Seattle requires recycling. It’s part of the reason I moved here. Glad to hear SF is just as cutting edge!
Nice! I think they already require this (or something like it) in Seattle, and last time I was there most people appreciated it as a nice touch rather than dreading having to complete the extra step every time they cooked.
Kudos, San Francisco!
So when do you head back to Oz? Or do you? I still want to meet up when I’m there early February, if possible!
@Kristin- It still completely kills me that recycling isn’t required in all 50 states. Sooner or later it will have to go mandatory. Composting too! Recycling has been huge in California for some time now, but I am so happy to see composting going mainstream. I’ve heard that Seattle is really green and eco minded as well. A big reason a lot of people bop between the two cities.
I made the leap back home knowing that I needed to save for several months in order to make my next move to Europe. It would have been Sydney or SF and I chose SF. And though it’s dreary and cold here, I am happy to be back in the buzz of this fantastic city.
@Colin- I won’t be headed back to oz anytime soon
