Virtual Pilates Date Update: Reader Feedback Rocks My World

by Amber on February 25, 2010

So last week I introduced my Virtual Pilates Dating service to the world. I’d been sitting on this massive idea for almost a year now and was so excited to see what you all thought. As you know I am giving away 10 free one hour virtual pilates privates to launch this new service. All you have to do is fill out a survey about your movement/pilates background.

Let’s just say I am floored by all your responses! I had thirty people enter within the first few days and want to extend the offer to you all for another week before I choose the ten winners. If you are wondering what I am looking for in the perfect pilates date fear not! I love working with people from all movement backgrounds and abilities. I actually prefer a diverse group of clients to challenge my own teaching abilities. Bring it on peeps!

I’ve been connecting back and forth with those who entered and must say that you all keep ME inspired and motivated to keep teaching, writing and pursuing my passions. So thank you!!!

Here’s a little taste of some of the questions I asked and the rocking answers I got from you guys…

What makes you a great date?

” I always try to bring a beginner’s mind to the new things I try and not get bogged down with expectations, the only thing I bring is basic knowledge of how to move my body allowing me to focus on actually learning the specifics. Also as a male I feel that we as a gender are often marginalized when considering something different besides the old standby weight training (which I also do and enjoy) but considering all the possibilities out there it is a shame. So in my own small way I am doing what I can to change that and your site while oriented a little more towards the female side has a lot good information for anyone. Which is another reason I would enjoy and get a lot out of having a Pilates “date” with you .”

This was just part of his answer! I couldn’t agree more with his take on the male stereotype. More and more guys are understanding the necessity of flexibility, core stability, and mind/body work in an effort to improve their game and performance. There’s a reason Kelly Slater swears by Pilates to keep him in perfect shape for riding monster waves. Besides, Joseph Pilates created his method originally for boxers, which then got picked up by dancers. It was created on a man’s body but tends to draw more women because of the matcho male gym-rat stereotype. Here’s a great article from USA today on men changing their bodies with the Pilates method.

“I’m not so fabulous at the moment but looking to make this an epic year and discover my fabulousness”

I love this attitude! We all have to start somewhere and there is no time like the present. Don’t wait a second longer. Try this quick movement sequence to instantly energize and stay motivated for more.

“I’m just discovering the world of yoga and Pilates, and I want to learn more! Ever since I’ve been reading your blog, I am more conscious of little things and I feel much healthier.”

I am so happy to introduce you all to the world of Pilates. The technique completely changed my body and cleared up several overuse injuries I had from dance. It has been my saving grace for injury prevention and longevity in my dance career. Seeing it change my clients lives in the same way is the ultimate reward. More than anything I am stoked that just from reading my articles you are building awareness and feel better in mind, body and spirit.

“I’m cute, I insist on going halfsies, I don’t talk too much. Oh? Pilates date? I’m a dedicated workout-a-holic looking for an awesome new routine…and maybe abs like Amber’s. AWESOME.”

Haha. This witty reply comes direct from a new blogger friend of mine, Kristin Norris of Instigationology.com. She cracks me up and has boundless energy. Luckily she will be in San Francisco this weekend and we’ll have a chance to finally meet in person at the studio.

Stay tuned for some video highlights of our session. I figure it’s a great way for you all to see how I work in studio, learn more about pilates and have a laugh. I’ll be kicking her butt and you’ll see how much fun can be had on the equipment.

Fill out my easy survey if you are interested. I’m looking forward to connecting more personally with each and every one of you!

Hey Amber!
Wow, I liked this post! I have never tried pilates or yoga but it is definitely something that I would be interested in trying out. Another form or art that is fantastic for the body would be the martial art capoeira :)

Have an awesome weekend miss!

@Kristin- yay! I am so excited to meet up in person finally :D
@Diggy- So glad you liked the post and gained some insight into why I adore this work so much. I used to dance for a Brazilian dance company that incorporated a lot of Capoeira. Amazing work! thanks for the sweetness as usual.
