Take advantage of the last few days of sunshine and get outside to join a Bike Polo game. You heard right, the game of polo, which dates back to the 1800′s, is the new rage with bicycle enthusiasts. Bikers from around the country are taking over basket ball courts and other small spaces available in big cities to play Urban Bike Polo.
Sounds fun, huh? The rules for Urban Bike Polo are few and differ from region to region, but for all those guys out there, contact is allowed, just not encouraged. The most difficult aspect of the game by far is that no one is allowed to touch their feet to the pavement. So while players are scrambling to hit the (very small) ball with an even more awkward mallet and meneuver around the court and other players, they have to balance the whole time! A player who puts their foot down has to perform a “tap out”, where they must ride to an area at the edge of the court and tap a given object before resuming play.
Here’s a hilarious clip of a Bike Polo game played on a Portland Oregon court:
Why not step outside, breathe in the fresh air, feel the suns warmth, clear your mind, and then grab a mallet? If you’re a cyclist who is looking to mix up your workout, grab some bike buddies and some home made mallets and hit the street. Have fun and get sweaty!
