Thanks for sharing this – so true and yet so sad
Hey Amber!
Wow, thanks for sharing, I watched the whole thing. It’s unbelievable how people can be so ignorant!! Another thing I do not understand is how people who are so obese can be happy with how they look? What a waste of money on healthcare!
Cheers!
Diggy
@diggy- Ignorant is a strong word dude. People lack education about what is in their food, which is what Jaime is trying to say here. Unfortunately unless you have been to these parts of the US you don’t understand the mentality. This country has a disgusting way of pushing junk food on it’s patrons and hiding the actual facts about what we are really ingesting.
If you’ve never been obese you don’t know what it’s like and there for can’t judge. I’m sure they aren’t happy with their physique, but it’s not all about that. It’s about how they feel and think as well. When you feel heavy and tired the last thing you want to do is workout, which leads to more sitting around and then emotional eating because of the lack of simple zest and mobility for life. It’s a downward spiral that stems from mind/ body and spirit.
Education and mass action is what needs to happen. Jaime is dead on!

I stumbled across your site somehow a few weeks back, and have slowly been digesting the plethora of information. Even though I have yet to experiment with yoga or pilates, I have been actively trying to improve my diet and nutrition, as well as my overall fitness over the past few years. In fact, I woke up today and realized that exactly a year ago, I was 30+ pounds heavier, and only in retrospect do I realize it was taking a toll on my confidence as well.
Even though I had briefly heard of Jamie Oliver, I want to thank you for posting this video from TED, as I had not seen it before. It’s truly inspiring. And shocking. I would say unbelievable, but frankly, I see it every day, so how could I be blind to it? Although I never considered myself “obese” even while at my heaviest, I surely was severely overweight, and on a horrible path. Just over 2 years ago, I turned my life around. I had been dumped by my girlfriend at the time, and realized that while dating her for the previous 3+ years, I had fallen into that “comfortable” realm, and stopped caring about my health. Stopped trying to be the best version of myself; my epic self as you so eloquently put it
These days, I’ve never felt better! I don’t shy away from the beach or the mirror anymore. Sure, I still have plenty of room to grow, and so much to learn. And I’m sure I will still “fall off the path” and have bad days. The thing is, I’ve realized that you can’t dwell on that; shit happens, LIFE happens; each day is an opportunity to turn yourself around. To get back on the path towards the goal that you strive for, whatever it may be.
I’m sure you get this constantly, but I want to thank you for being an inspiration and doing what you do. Keep spreading the love. I just wanted to give some back.

@Adam- wow! Thanks so much for sharing your motivational story and sweet comments. We all go through those periods of time where we let ourselves go for a while. I went through a bit of it while traveling and as well in a previous relationship. We can easily lose sight of the importance of taking care of ourselves. Like you said we just have to keep getting back on the horse.
I am so happy to hear my articles are making an impact on you and inspiring you to keep thriving. Looking forward to more comments from you!
On the tail of that, I just wanted to share Jamie’s sentiment at the end of his presentation:
“I wish for everyone to help create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.” – Jamie Oliver, TED2010
Wow, he’s a great speaker and he’s got some great insight. Can’t wait for his new show coming out this month!

@Alexis- I had no idea he had a show launching! Fantastic.
Hey Amber!
I love TED talks! Though I have to admit, when I clicked through to watch the video I was hoping that you were going to explain something.
Jamie Oliver will have to do.
@Sid- haha. I wish I had the spare time in the beginning of the week to make something similar. The end of my week is more open at this point, so here I go….producing content for you guys! thanks for the support Sid!
Very informative video. Thanks for sharing. Time to pass the message on.
Thank you
Amber-
Thanks for sharing that remarkable video. I try to catch as many TED videos as I can but somehow that one slipped through the cracks.
I love Jamie’s energy, enthusiasm, passion, and boldness. Obesity is indeed an epic disease. Yet, sadly, as Jamie points out, no one is rushing him on-stage as he reveals the cure. Of course, with a disease like obesity, there isn’t a single cure. Each person is different, each family is unique, each community is special. There are fundamental underlying truths and knowledge, of course. But the message will have to be honed slightly to make it as infectious as possible in every corner of the world.
Thanks again for sharing!!
Cheers!
Matt
@Matt- absolutely. Every area of the world is incredibly unique. Just like one diet or nutrition plan doesn’t fit all people, one approach to the obesity crisis won’t cover all basis. I am ecstatic to see his show come out on ABC. If I watched TV I would Tivo it!
