I live in Bangkok, Thailand. The tap water gets purified fairly well, but the pipe distribution system throughout the entire metropolis has not been updated or fixed since installation. So our pipes are rusted and havens for the parasites that used to live in the untreated water.

Would a tap-filter work against developing country baddies?

(we use Sparkle… the commercial plastic water jugs that are washed and reused)

@ Billy Waters–On your fluoride concerns: First of all, not all tap water is floridated in the USA. Check with your community and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Most of NJ (where we live) is not floridated, for example, and the way I found this out is a funny story: I went to a dentist in Northern NJ shortly after we moved here, and the second I opened my mouth (I have only one filling) my dentist said, “You didn’t grow up around here, did you?”

I know some people still think fluoridation is a communist plot, but I have good teeth to thank for it.

Good Post – For these reasons, I have been using Brita/Pure filters for years along w/ Nalgene bottles.

This is a very insightful post. A picture is worth a thousand words, right? I had no idea that bottled water is not as regulated as tap. I always drink filtered water at home – the initial cost of the filter is recovered extremely quickly since you are no longer purchasing bottles. On the road, it’s a bit more difficult though, so I’m still sticking with the bottles, tho it kills me to pay for bottled water at the airport.

@Billy- I see your point, but I wonder if a good Brita filter would do the trick…I use a Brita filter to get rid of any lead or chlorine.

@Anthony- yes you do have clean water, but there isn’t much of it in some parts! Victoria has been in drought for ten years. When traveling you can always use the filtering tablets that dissolve and purify any tap water you come across. That or boil the water. There are options!

Luckily where I live in Australia, the water is of really good quality so there is not really any point in drinking bottled water. I have to admit though, when traveling I drink bottled water and often there is no choice

I don’t drink tap water because it is fluoridated in this country.
