Great article, and so timely! I just returned from a weekend mindful meditation retreat and was reconnected with the power & satisfaction of eating for nourishment's sake (and not mindless eating for other reasons). A beautiful thing! When I find myself getting lost in thought, I stop for a moment and just breathe...

@ Carl- haha.. I'm with you on the throwing away food thing. I'm working on this mentality as well. I've started ordering small plates when I'm eating out and then taking inventory of my hunger before ordering more. Hilarious stuff!

@ Amanda- so true! Thanks for the added tidbit. That's why I can eat a small plate of Indian food and be stuffed for hours...there is just sooo much flavor and spice. Great point!

Thank you both for reading and commenting. Nothing could mean more.

Hi Amber - Another benefit of mindful eating is that you will notice whether or not the food you are eating is bland. If you are shoveling it in, that tends to go unnoticed ;).

When you start eating more flavorful foods, you need less to be satisfied because there is more taste in each bite (I guess this is the "mind" part).

Solid article! I am SO guilty of every one of your eating faux pas. Eating more than you need, eating quickly, eating while you do other stuff, huge bites, huge servings, blah, blah, BLAH.

One of my main things is that I get the mentality that I have to eat everything on my plate, even after I'm satisfied. I think it's because I don't like the idea of throwing away food. I think, "I payed for this food; I can't just THROW IT AWAY!" Even though I guess I could save it for leftovers. But then I think, "these leftovers aren't enough to have a full meal, so I'm just gonna eat it now".
Obviously I need to work on it! haha
