No matter how much we hustle sometimes we just can’t make that 6pm restorative yoga class or 9am Reformer group. Classes in a studio or gym setting are ideal for staying motivated and inspired by others, but life does get in the way sometimes and you’ll need a go to back up plan. We are mobile, globe trotting people who could use a personal trainer in our pocket. Luckily downloadable smart phone applications and podcasts, along with web based fitness videos, are making it easier than ever to workout just about anywhere.

Downward dog on a Manly beach in Sydney? Teaser in a sleeper car on your way to the wine country? Whether you’re traveling or just down right busy, these hand picked pilates and yoga mobile resources will keep you sculpted, flexible and centered. Here are my top picks for pilates, yoga and overall wellness apps, podcasts and web videos. Don’t have an iPhone or iPod? Scope out the web video highlights!

Podcasts: Listen until your heart’s content and body’s strong…

Balanced Body: Direct from one of the most revered Pilates sources comes this mini 5 minute workout cast. They cover not only mat technique, but equipment based sequences as well! Perfect for instructors and students who adore the equipment. Free to boot!

Pilates on Fifth: Free and fabulous. Straight out of their New York studio, the well known twins offer these 2-3 min weekly pilates movement sequences along with longer workouts. Their tips will help improve your form and get more out of your practice.

Yoga Journal: Another free podcast that provides a weekly yoga class from one of San Francisco’s leading yoga teachers.

Find these fantastic three on iTunes.

Applications:

Pumpone’s iPump Pilates: I would definitely recommend this application for those pilates loving readers! It offers 3 progressive levels of Pilates mat sequences complete with images, video, and audio instruction. It’s the only pilates application of it’s kind unfortunately. We need to spread the good word about the Pilates method.

Yoga Stretch: For those who want to get creative, Yoga Stretch allows you to build and save up to 5 sequences or play their preloaded session.

Yoga Journal iPractice: From the pro’s behind Yoga Journal magazine comes iPractice. 15 unique yoga classes you can take with you anywhere. The easy to follow sequences were crafted by expert yoga teachers. A must for those who want to make sure they get a full body workout and flow.

Teavana: I’m turning into a tea lover! This wellness inspired app helps you create and steep the perfect cup of tea. No more guessing and leaf scorching!

Web Based Videos:

Ultimate Pilates Workouts: Katherine and Kimberly Corp are the master minds behind this mecca of Pilates video workouts. You can choose to create your own or follow along with their free videos. More importantly they offer detailed instruction on form while creating fun sequences with various props and pieces of equipment like the bosu ball or magic circle. All you need is an internet connection! I would hook up my computer to the TV for even better viewing.

My Yoga Online: Subscribe and get unlimited free yoga and pilates classes from world class teachers whenever you want. With the economy in shambles everyone is looking for a way to cut costs, but still get their yoga or pilates fix. Though I still love my weekly classes in the SF community, these videos are an invaluable resource for at home practice.

Do you have a favorite on the go app or podcast? Do you workout at home with workout DVD’s? I like a little of both, but would love to hear from you guys in the comments.
